IMPORTANT STEPS

Testing in this order will save you a 2nd trip to the DMV for a license printing but can be done in the opposite order.

GETTING LICENSED

AFTER COMPLETING THE 6 MONTH AND 50 HOURS OF SUPERVISED DRIVING, STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO TEST FOR A LICENSE.

STEP 1

Schedule a driving skills test done in your vehicle with an approved Idaho State Driving Skills Tester.
To access the DMV's most current list of all approved Idaho State Driving Skills Testers click on the IDAHO DMV button above.

STEP 2

Schedule an appointment at the DMV for the written test.
Please note that when scheduling your test, it can only take place 6 months and a day after receiving your permit from an instructor or after your 17th birthday, whichever comes first. If you take the skills test prior to this date, you will have to pay to have it retaken.

Once the driver has received a license, there are two restrictions that may apply according to their age and will be noted on the back of the driver's license.

  • Drivers under the age of 16 are only allowed to drive during daytime hours from 5:00am-10:00pm. Nighttime driving from 10:00pm-5:00am is only allowed with a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat until the driver's 16th birthday- no exceptions.

  • Drivers under age 18 are only allowed to have ONE passenger under 18 not related by blood, marriage, or adoption during the first 6 months after issue date.Drivers caught with more than one non-relative passenger under 18 may have their license revoked.
